How To Dye Your Hair At Home

If you are looking to dye your hair at home for the first time or simply looking to freshen your colour, you have come to the right place. Let us guide you through the process, from prep to hair dye application.

Step 1: Choosing a hair colour

The first step to choosing the perfect colour is to identify your current shade. Then, you can choose your colour. Luckily, we have a colour chart that

Step 2: Patch test

A patch test involves dabbing a small amount of the dye either behind your ear or inner elbow and leaving it to dry. The dye should be left on the skin for at least 48 hours unless irritation occurs.

Step 3: Preparation

Before using the plant-based hair dyes, the hair must be freed from any adhering residues. This means switching from conventional shampoos that contain silicones, parabens and petroleum derivatives to natural, organic shampoos. Also, styling products should be avoided before colouring.

Next, place the desired hair dye into a bowl. Slowly mix with hot or warm water to a viscous cream ( approx. 300ml for a package). The water temperature will depend on the shade (warm or cool). Make sure that the hair dye if of a creamy consistency and not dripping. Place either an old towel or cape around the shoulders to protect clothing.

Step 4: Application

When the hair dye is at a temperature that is comfortable for you, begin to dye the hair. Using a brush, apply strand by strand and evenly onto all the hair starting from the hairline. If desired you can also knead the dye into the hair. Place the covering cap over the hair and cover it with a towel turban.

Step 5: Let it soak

The optimal process times for our hair dyes is between 15 minutes and two hours. This is the general rule we go by: very light and/or damaged hair needs a shorter time, whereas thick, dark hair and a healthy hair structure probably need more time. Make sure that the hair dye does not dry out during this process.

Step 6: Rinsing

With plenty of warm water, rinse off the hair dye until the water is clear. To allow the hair dye to develop to its fullest potential, please avoid using shampoo or any care products within the first 48 hours. At this stage a tinge of green may appear. This will disappear within the 48 hours.
