How to use our hair colours.

 

Look forward to your new hair colour. Here you will find what you have to know so that everything works out perfectly. Plant-based hair dyes work differently from conventional hair dyes. They do not change the inner structure of the hair, but surround every single hair with a shining glaze. This also means the application is easy and uncomplicated.

Choosing the right shade

First, you have to determine your own initial your own initial hair colour and then choose your desired shade from our handy colour chart. Lighter colouring is not possible with plant-based hair dyes, darker than the original shade is always possible.

Before the first application: dye a test strand

So that you can be sure that the result of your hair dyeing is what you want to have, first of all dye a test strand. Ideally, dye a test strand at the lightest part of the hair or the part with the most greyness. For trial dyeing, mix a tablespoon of dye with 2 to 3 tablespoons of warm water. Does it look good? + You need:

  • Ayluna plant-based hair dye (one package is sufficient for approx. shoulder length hair)
  • a bowl for mixing
  • approx. 300 ml hot water
  • a fork or whisk
  • old towels for covering hair and textiles
  • a paint brush for applying the dye
  • Ayluna shampoo or ghassoul (rhassoul powder or wash cream)
  • disposable gloves (included in the package)
  • covering cap for the hair (included in the package)

+ Warning notices:

  • Do not inhale the fine powder
  • Apply plant-based hair dyes only on healthy, intact scalp
  • Use only for (scalp) hair, not for eyelashes, eyebrows or body painting
  • Do not store mixed plant-based hair dye

 Step 1 — Prepare the hair

Before using the plant-based hair dyes, the hair must be freed from any adhering residues. This means if conventional shampoos have been used up to now, you should switch to natural, organic shampoos. The substances contained in conventional shampoos, parabens, silicones and petroleum derivatives, adhere to the hair and seal it. Also, styling products should be avoided before colouring with plant-based hair dyes since they ususally contain mineral oils, silicones or other film formers.

Step 2 — Mixing

Place the desired Ayluna plant-based hair dye in a bowl. Slowly mix with hot or warm water to a viscous cream (you will need approx. 300 ml for a package). The water temperature will depend on the shade (warm or cool). The dye mixture should be creamy, but not drip. Protect your clothes with a hairdressing cape or an old towel as stains that have arisen can be difficult or impossible to remove.

Step 3 — Application

When the dye is at a temperature that is comfortable for you, begin dying the hair. Using a paint brush, apply Ayluna plant-based hair dye strand by strand and evenly onto all the hair. Always start at the hairline. You can also »knead« the dye in, in order to cover the whole area. Done? Now put on the covering cap and cover it with a »towel turban«. Remove any dye residues from face, ears, and neck.

Step 4 — Let it soak

The optimal process time for the Ayluna plant-based hair dye is between 15 minutes and two hours. By dyeing the test strand you already know how much time you need for your hair. The general rule applies: very light and/or damaged hair needs a shorter time, whereas thick, dark hair and a healthy hair structure probably need more time. Make sure that the plant-based hair dye does not dry during process time.

Step 5 — Rinsing

Now rinse the plant-based hair dye out completely with plenty of warm water until the water is clear. Please do not use shampoo or any care products within the first 48 hours so the plant-based hair dye can develop its fullest potential. A possible tinge of green after dyeing will disappear within this time.

Tips, tricks and useful information

+ Concealing grey hair

With Ayluna plant-based hair dyes, a beautiful, natural-looking concealing of grey can be achieved. If your hair is more than 40% grey and you want to dye it a darker shade, it is best to do a so-called pre-pigmentation. First, dye your hair with Ayluna Maroon or Copper red (process time approx. 30 minutes) and directly afterwards with the desired shade of brown. Ayluna plant-based hair dye surrounds the hair with a shining glaze. This means that with regular application the longer hair is dyed more intensively and darker. Whoever wants to avoid this effect, just dyes the hairline more often instead.

+ Mixing dyes

It is possible to mix all Ayluna plant-based hair dyes as desired. Thus, you can create your very own favourite hair dye shade.

+ Water temperature

This depends on the chosen colour and the desired end result.

  • Blonde shades should be applied with warm water,approx.50-60°C,and left on the hair for a maximum of 30 minutes. Warmer water temperatures, as well as longer exposure times, leads to the development of a red shimmer.
  • If the colouring effect is not sufficient after 30 minutes, it is better to prepare the powder again and then dye for another 30 minutes.
  • For cooler shades (without red) the water must be 50-60°C warm.
  • For warmer shades, the water must be 60-90°C.

+ Extra care

For an extra bit of care you can add a tablespoon of hair oil (e.g. Ayluna Wondertree) to the mixture.

+ Avoiding stains and discolouration

Plant-based hair dye on the skin can be removed by using a mixture of oil and lemon juice. Up to two weeks after dyeing, the hair can still »bleed« (lose some colour) when wet – that’s why you should protect clothes and bedclothes from contact with wet hair.

+ Chlorine

Chlorinated water does not harm the plant-based hair dyes. You can go swimming after two days and then every day without causing discolouration.

+ After dyeing

As the plant-based hair dyes still have to develop within 24 to 48 hours, do not wash hair with shampoo or use styling or hair care products within the time frame.

+ How quickly do plant-based hair dyes wash out?

Our plant-based hair dyes are not tints, but behave like permanent hair colours. This means that they do not usually wash out, but the colour grows out.

+ Chemically-dyed or permed hair

Both conventional hair dyes and perms bring chemical substances into the hair and have an aggressive effect on the structure of the hair. This may lead to adverse reactions if plant-based hair dyes are applied shortly after chemical dyeing or a perm. As a general rule: always leave an interval of ten hair washes and/or 3 weeks between these treatments. Plant-based dyed hair should never be bleached.

+ Dyeing blond / bleaching or lightening

Dyeing blond or lightening is generally not possible with natural plant-based hair dyes.

+ Colour appears slightly greenish

If a greenish tone appears directly after dyeing the hair, no action is necessary yet. As a rule, this disappears after all by itself after one or two days. This occurs when plant-based hair dyes react with oxygen in the air. If the greenish shimmer doesn't dissapera completely, you can apply a rinse with our Copper Red Hair Dye. Mix two tablesppons of the hair colour with 200ml warm water. Pour over the hair and leave for 2 to 10 mins. This process can be repeated if necessary.
