How do I choose the right shade?

First, you have to determine your own initial hair colour and then choose the desired shade from the colour chart. Lighter colouring is not possible with plant-based hair dyes but darker shades are!

The result of the colouring depends on the original hair colour, the hair structure, the water temperature when applying the hair dye and the application length.

Can I determine the colour result on my hair in advance?

There are several ways to do this. One option is to dye a test strand of your own hair OR you can dye your own hair previously collected from a hairbrush. For trial dyeing, mix approximately one tablespoon of dye powder with 2-3 tablespoons of warm water.

Does the water temperature play a role when mixing the plant-based hair dyes?

Ayluna’s blonde shades should be applied with warm water (50-60°C) and left on for a maximum of 30 minutes. Warmer water temperatures, as well as longer exposure times lead to the development of a red shimmer. If the colouring effect is not sufficient after 30 minutes, it is better to prepare the powder again and then dye for another 30 mins.

For warmer shades, the ideal water temperature is between 60-90°C.

What is the optimum ratio of powder to water for dyeing?

The plant-based hair dye powder should always be mixed with water in a ratio of approximately 1:3- i.e. 300ml of water for one pack of hair colour. Place the powder into a bowl and gradually add the water. Best mixed with a fork or whisk. The consistency of the hair dye should be creamy and not drip.

What happens if the colour appears slightly greenish?

If a slightly green tone appears directly after dyeing your hair don’t panic! The greenish colour will disappear after a day or two. This is because plant-based hair dyes react with the oxygen in the air so the final colour tone and the correct strength of the hair colour will only appear after 24-48 hours.

If the greenish shimmer persists after 48 hours, you can apply a rinse with our Copper Red Hair Dye. To do this, make a thin rinse of 2 tablespoons of Copper Red with 200ml of warm water. Pour this over the hair and leave for 2-10 minutes.

How quickly do hair the hair dyes wash out?

Ayluna’s plant-based hair dyes behave like permanent colours. This means that the colour doesn’t usually wash out, but grows out.

How long should the hair dye be left on?

As a general rule, blonde shades should remain on the hair for a much shorter time than darker shades.

  • Blonde hair dyes should remain on the hair for 15-30 mins.

  • Red hair dyes should have an application time of 30-120 minutes.

  • Dark colours require an application time of 60-120 minutes.

Very light and/or damaged hair needs a shorter exposure time. Healthy and thicker hair needs a longer application time.

Do the hair dyes cover grey hairs?

Covering grey hair can be achieved with our hair dyes.

If the proportion of white hairs is higher than 40%, a pre-colouring is necessary for a darker colouring. The pre-colouring process should be undertaken with a red shade (Copper Red) that is left on for 30 minutes. Rinse well with warm water and immediately dye with the desired darker colour (45-60 minutes). Don’t panic! The red tone will completely covered and the grey hair will be perfectly covered.

Can I wash my hair with shampoo after dyeing my hair?

Our hair dyes fully develop within 24-48 hours. No hair washing with shampoo and no application of styling products should take place during this time in order not to disturb the process.
